André has a passion for Vanwyksdorp, its people and its environment. This passion has been directed into a life dedicated to educating, uplifting, rehabilitating, and improving these, at every opportunity. Years of personal research saw him produce a book on the history of Vanwyksdorp. He is instrumental in ensuring the financial stability and maintenance of the heritage church building (completed in 1907). André has been practicing conservation livestock farming since 1986 and has made his farm available to students for practical study on sustainable use of natural resources.
André was part of the establishment of the Rooiberg Conservancy and the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve. He has also been involved for many years in environmental impact studies in the area.
In 2020, André founded Jobs4Carbon, a non-profit company, dedicated to land rehabilitation. This is achieved through cultivating and planting the miracle plant, Spekboom. Also, by clearing and eradicating alien invasive plants and preventing soil erosion. At least 60 previously unemployed people now have meaningful employment. Jobs4Carbon funds come from various sources and his fund-raising efforts are constantly in practice.
